Is It Possible To Go From Eating Gluten Every Day To Suddenly Being Allergic?

This supposedly happened to my roommate. Apparently she gets panic attacks and doesn’t feel good after she’s eating gluten now. She already has chronic back pain, depression, has been suicidal, and was vegan. Is she just trying to add to the list for more attention? She is VERY dependent on her parents (that go along with everything and give her attention) still even though she’s in college. I don’t want to be mean but her dad has a gluten allergy and I feel like it would be an easy thing for her to make up. She says she can’t even have a salad if 1 crouton touched it (even if she picks the crouton off).

Either is possible I think.
She could be looking for attention. Although it’s tough to live a strict gluten free diet. For example, no wheat, no rye, no barley, no oatmeal, no pre-made soups (most have hydrolyzed vegetable protein or food starch which is wheat or gluten), many dressings and cereals and chips use wheat to “bulk up” their content since it’s cheap. You have to carefully read every box to make sure there is no gluten. I mean, living gluten free means a lot of time in the kitchen. Not sure if she knows that, but if she does thats a lot of work for attention. Maybe for her it’s worth it though.
You could encourage her to get tested, otherwise there is no way to take merit in what she says.
If her dad has a gluten intolerance or Celiac’s Disease there can be a genetic link.
And before I got diagnosed with a gluten intolerance I suffered with a lot of symptoms that wouldn’t necessarily be thought as related. For example as well as stomach aches, gastritis, and heartburn I had a lot of depression, headaches, joint pain, and eczema so I mean, who knows? Its tough to say.
I would hope that as a college student she could at least cut the umbilical cord lol…it’s got to happen sometime.

I have experienced some rather severe “reactions” to food. I have explosive diarrhea, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal problems. I have already gone to a gastroenterologist who has ruled out the standard irritable bowel, colitis, etc. She even ruled out a gluten allergy..which to be honest I really thought it was because when I’m on South Beach Diet, which removes all breads, pastas, etc I have no digestive issues. I had been “issue-fee” for several weeks, but all of a sudden I had a soup and salad at Olive Garden and BAM, within 20 minutes the issues were back…full force. I found out there was cream in the soup. That was the only thing I could think that I ate differently (Nope, I didn’t eat any breadsticks). On South Beach, I eat a lot of cheese, so I’m thinking that lactose intolerance can be ruled out. But, I also haven’t been drinking milk like I used to.

I posted a couple questions yesterday, and thank you to everyone who took the time to answer. I made an appt. with our ped. tomorrow for my son to look into the possible wheat/gluten issues.
He has chronic diarrhea which we thought was due to milk/soy allergies. Those have been removed from his diet but the diarrhea continues.
From what I’ve gathered, I’m going to ask for a blood test to check his IgG4 levels and his IgE levels, correct?
My son also has received physical therapy, developmental therapy and is currently receiving speech therapy. There has been no mention of the word “autism” yet, but after hours of research last night it seems that this may all be combined in some way. Anyone with similar experiences?
A family friend who is a GI doctor at a major children’s hospital dismisses this as “toddler’s diarrhea” but I have a gut feeling it is more. I’ve learned to trust your instinct as it is usually right on target!

I got told that my now 3 year old son had toddlers diarrhea. I didnt think so as I have a real hard time beliveing that ANYONE has diarrhea for no reason. In my eyes if you have diarrhea, there is something wrong! I am glad I didnt back down cause my son ended up having an infection in this intestines called c-diff.

He had to be on 2 rounds of these special antibiotics called flagyl. After that it went away. But before we found out that is what he had (he got tested for it but hte people at the doctors office read it wrong and said that it cam back negitive when it was positive) He had diarrhea for 9 months straight. He also got tested for the celiac disease, which is what you are talking about getting your son tested for, that the thing when your body almost seems to have an allergic reaction to gluten. While it seems to be an allergy it really is not, it is an immune response. I was sure my son also had the celiac disease, cause he seemed to have so many of the symptoms, but it turns out that it was just the c-diff.

And I was RELIVED!

Good luck, but if I was you I would also ask for a c diff test to make sure that is not the cause of his diarrhea.

Can A Milk Allergy Be Possible If The Only Symptom Is Waking During The Night?

A book we consulted suggests that waking could be a result of a milk allergy. I would think this would manifest some other symptom besides waking. He doesn’t spit up, (he often did on formula, though) he doesn’t have a runny nose, and he hasn’t any rashes. What do you think?

I don’t have to be an RN to answer this. This is probably not an allergy to milk. How old is the child. Are you talking about regular milk or formula? It’s normal for babies not to sleep all night. You should really consult your pediatricin.
