He could be INTOLERANT of gluten. This means he is unable to DIGEST the gluten—similar to what someone with LACTOSE INTOLERANCE has—they are not ALLERGIC to milk, they just can’t DIGEST IT.
He COULD be allergic to WHEAT ALSO, or INSTEAD of INTOLERANT of gluten.
I myself, have food allergies (beef, oats, and some preservatives to name a few). I ALSO have GLUTEN INTOLERANCE…I get BLOATED—EXTREMELY, cramping, lose stools, but, haven’t vomited from that. Not to say one couldn’t….but, haven’t heard of that.

Food allergies are funny—I had the skin testing done a while ago, and they caught SOME of my allergies, but, the control didn’t even register properly. (but, then again, I WAS on allergy medicine, and they told me to only NOT TAKE IT THAT DAY, and alot of them take more than 12 hours to completely clear out of the system). Since then, I have developed the beef and oat food allergy. I also have asthma, so even though the test did or didn’t say I was allergic to something, I judged by how my asthma did on how I was going to deal with certain situations….if I KNEW that cut grass bothers me, I make sure to try to avoid it when I can, OR take my medicine BEFORE HAND.
Unfortunately, gluten intolerance/allergies aren’t so easy. Neither is MILK allergies. Milk is HIDDEN in SO MANY products….and, sometimes, not clearly labeled. Sometimes, for the milk, you HAVE to look for LACTOSE as well as milk (someone told me once that perhaps WHEY as well…although, not sure on that–I think that would be more if they were allergic to ALL dairy, like cheese).

There isn’t any magic pill for Gluten intolerance or allergy—avoidance is the only thing that usually works (although some health food stores may sell herbal or other pills for this….don’t know how they are). I stick to rice, potatoes, and corn….and mix it up a bit….tortilla chips or rice cakes, the McCain SMILES are gluten free last I checked (but, ALWAYS read the package EVERY TIME as they DO CHANGE ingrediants and processing methods).

Good luck to you….see if your doc can refer you to a nutritionist or someone you can talk to to better learn about this and how to work around this for preparing meals safely and easily.

Mineral To Eradicate Milk Allergy?

People with milk allergies now have hope of being able to drink milk in the future.

Microbiologists Peter Stougaard and Marianne Schmidt from Denmark’s University of Copenhagen have found a mineral in Ikka Fjord in southern Greenland which can be added to milk to remove the lactose which many cannot tolerate.

The mineral is found throughout southern Greenland, but specifically in Ikka Fjord.

According to the journal Polar Front, the two scientists have developed and patented a new enzyme that can break down lactose. The enzyme is isolated from bacteria which live inside the Ikka Fjord mineral deposits, writes public broadcaster knr.gl.

Stougaard also said he and his colleagues have carried out preliminary chemical studies on sea cucumbers from the deposits in Ikka Fjord which suggest the organisms may contain a cancer-inhibiting substance that could be utilised by the pharmaceutical industry.

He definitely is a big milk drinker. Maybe it’s because we don’t give him juice anymore..so his options are milk or water and naturally he picks milk most of the time.

Well, this past week, he was complaining of stomach pain off & on. He would casually say, “my tummy hurts” but then he’d never get sick. Then one day during lunch he said his stomach hurt and started crying. I asked him where it hurt and he put his fingers right in his belly button.

Now, it just so happens that Luke has an umbilical hernia (since birth) and naturally my first thought was that he was having an issue with the hernia. Think: twisted bowel, intestinal issue, etc… so I was a bit concerned.

We took him into the Pediatrican and she said all was well with the hernia. She asked a lot about his dairy consumption. She said that often milk allergy will cause pain right in the belly button area.

We also learned that a milk allergy, like a soy allergy, is often “cumulative” meaning that he might tolerate a small amount of dairy but at a certain level, he’ll have pain and/or then get sick to his stomach.

This might explain some random mystery loose stools Luke has from time to time.

So, she suggested that Luke still has issues with dairy, although they don’t seem to be nearly as severe as they once were when he was a baby.

We have backed way off of milk and I see a huge improvement already. The improvement that is most noticable is in his behavior. He seems just much happier with no tantrums/melt downs over the last few days. He hasn’t said his belly hurts so we are back to a happy Lukey.

The doctor is assuming that your son is allergic to lactose. So since the bacteria cultures in cheese and yogurt consume most of the lactose these are usually fine choices. But I do understand your concerns, as moms we are programmed to be leery of advice that doesn’t always quite make sense. And it is possible that your son could have problems with cheese and yogurt if he doesn’t have a lactose allergy and instead has a milk protein allergy. Try giving him yogurt first thing in the morning with nothing else, if he is fine and has no “issues” in his diaper, then it most likely is a lactose problem and you will be able to breathe a little easier about the cheeses and yogurt. And if it is a lactose problem, it’s very likely that he will outgrow this condition in time.

My daughter is allergic to all milk products, and chocolate. She has been since she was born and she is eight now. We need to read everything carefully to make sure that she has no milk products at all. None of the following ingredients either that are made from parts of milk: Whey, casien, lactose, lactobumin, lactic acid, anything else that starts with lact-, cream, butter, and all other milk products. I don’t understand why the doctor would say that she can eat cheese and yogurt if she is allergic. If she was intollerent that would be okay, but not for an allergy! We keep a lot of Benadryl in my house in case she gets a reaction to something…as well as take an Epipen everywhere. Sometimes even watching the labels she gets reactions, which include hives, a rash, and asthma symptoms. I sware that milk hides in foods. She drinks either soy or rice milk. She likes the Silk Chocolate Soy Milk the best….(It does not really have chocolate in it….only Cocoa). She also likes the Market Basket, and Stop-and-Shop brands as well. The soy milk does not taste so bad….and it is filled with protein that is good for the heart as well.

You need to try RAW Dairy products. Most of the world does not pasteurize their dairy. The reason is that it is much more healthy for you. The problem we have in America is that we have unhealthy cows and the milk is not good, so they choose to pasteurize instead of fixing the unhealthy cow problem.
Cows fed grain in feed lots are not healthy. They have to give them antibiotics, etc. to keep them from getting to sick. If they would feed them grass and let them graze, they would be healthy and produce healthy dairy. Most people that are lactose intolerant can eat RAW dairy products. The reason is that it is the way nature intended for us to eat it. Also, feed him aged cheeses, not the “one day cheeses” like the Kraft company pawns off on the public. The RAW butter is wonderful food for you and your son. It contains lots of butyric acid that nourishes the cells of the large intestines. Don’t eat margarine. It is hydrogenated oils that clog your arteries. The power of marketing and big money is incredible. It’s amazing how most people actually believe margarine is good for you. It is pure junk and is terrible for the body.
If your son has an egg allergy, it is typically a protein digestion problem that he will most likely out grow in a few years.
Don’t turn to SOY either. It is very bad for you, unless it is fermented like the Japanese people eat. For good information on Soy, buy the book called, “The Whole Soy Story.” It is a very comprehensive, well documented, and well written book that will give you all the information you need regarding soy.

Additional information: The Raw Milk products do not contain the allergens that pasteurized dairy has in it. Additionally, many allergies are caused by food additives and food grown on chemically fertilized soils. Many people are very sensitive to this. Also, combinations of allergens in foods can create these problems.
If your son is truly cannot digest lactose, why is he also allergic to eggs as well. Eggs do not contain lactose. Does he have 2 separate allergies? The allergy tests that doctors do are usually tainted in many ways and not very accurate. You need to give the raw products a try and also, you can do what a huge part of the world does and eat cultured dairy. Keifer milk is wonderful and this product can be tolerated by lactose intolerant people, because it is a fermented product the ingredients are predigested. I would also forget making cupcakes for your son and create some healthful treats that are good for him.
A baby or small child has more taste discerning mechanisms that have not been tainted by modern diets. If you feed your son lots of carbs, low fat, and no meat, you will find he will be craving lots of things good and bad because his body is crying out for good fats and proteins, typically. Our body’s have only changed genetically 1% in the last 12,000 years. The high carb, low fat diets will encourage cravings. The lack of magnesium, for instance, will give a person chocolate and sugar cravings.
Fats are very important, especially for children. Avoid ALL vegetable oils, except for Olive, Walnut, Palm, and Coconut oils. Vegetable oils, like Canola, Soybean, Cottonseed, and Corn Oils are very unstable polyunsaturated oils. Most of them are rancid when you buy them in the store and then when you heat them, ever so slightly, they polymerize into trans fats because the cis configuration of the methyl groups move to the trans position in the polymerization process. Just the lights in stores, shining through the clear bottles changes these unstable oils rancid.
You son should be getting fats in the following ratio to balance his diet. If you follow this, you will see a change in his cravings and also likes and dislikes of certain foods:
60% monounsaturated oils (Olive Oil), 30% saturated fats (from grass fed beef, flax seed, coconut oil, and REAL BUTTER from raw cream only), 10% polyunsaturated oils (omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids in a 1:1 ratio).
The diet should consist of 40% protein, 30% fats, and 30% carbs.

Milk allergy?

She has watery bowls, skin irritation and gags within the hour after eating…no vomiting and not really fussy, could this be milk allergy??

No – probably not – but ask your doctor…

I have never heard of a baby being allergic to breastmilk. I suppose it could happen, but I have never heard of it.
I guess I think you should talk to your doctor. If your baby is allergic to breastmilk, then you are going to have a hard time finding a formula.
It sounds to me, though, like maybe your daughter has a virus of some sort. Especially if there is no vomiting.
If you are concerned, though, I would follow the stand-by: Take her to the doctor.

It’s unlikely your daughter is allergic to your breastmilk. That’s an extremely rare condition, and she wouldn’t have made it to 7 weeks alive if she were. She may be intolerant of something in your diet. Do you eat a lot of dairy? Spicy or gassy foods, caffeine and chocolate are all big ones to look at if your diet has a lot of those things.
If she has a milk allergy, formula is the last thing you want to give her. It’s purely milk-based, and will irritate her stomach even more if that’s what it is.

Lactose intolerance and milk allergy are different…
And yes you can have both.
Now lactose intolerance is not necessarily a bad thing.
Humans are designed to consume human milk.
There are certain enzymes in cow milk, which we are ill-equipped to digest.
As a result, a small portion of every dairy product humans consume remains unprocessed in our system…
Over time this results in clogged arteries.
When someone is lactose intolerant, their body is saying:
“Hey, this stuff isn’t good for me…get it out!”
Nothing is wrong with that at all!
Now, food allergies are a completely different subject.
There are two types of food allergies: immediate and delayed.
These immunologic reactions are further classified into:
Type I (immediate)…
And Types II, III, and IV (delayed).
And yes, you can have both immediate and delayed allergies.
The most common immediate food allergens are:
Nuts, soy, milk, eggs, wheat, seafood.
Here the individual is having a direct reaction to the food itself.
The symptoms will occur within a few minutes to an hour of eating and include:
Itching in the mouth.
Difficulty swallowing and breathing.
Nausea / vomiting.
Diarrhea / abdominal pain.
Hives / eczema.
Lightheadedness / weakness.
Asthma / anaphylaxis.
It appears your son has immediate food allergies to nuts, milk, wheat, and I would not be surprised if soy was the mystery culprit.
That said…
There are about 132 common delayed food allergens.
They include the above six foods, as well as, the most common fruits, veggies, grains and meats.
What is interesting about delayed food allergies—and why they go unrecognized—is that the individual may not produce symptoms for hours or days and they most often are chronic.
Delayed food allergies better known as ‘food sensitivities’ attack the immune system.
When an individual consumes such allergen the body does not perceive this food to be nourishment, but instead deems it an enemy and produces antibodies to attack it. Over time this can result in chronic fatigue, depression, and lower the immune system, which can cause a host of other complications.
Furthermore, it upsets the natural flora of the gut, which permits the overgrowth of yeast or Candida. Granted this does not happen over night, but Candida is responsible for acne, anxiety, insomnia, depression, ADHD, yeast infections, fungus, hair loss, leaky gut, irritable bowl syndrome, etc.
If you have a chronic illness, you have food allergies.
It is not to the other way around.
Quite a lot of damage for a glass of milk…eh?
So what to do?
Forget the double blind…
Milk does NOT do a body good.
That is a marketing ploy put out by milk farmers to increase profits.
Have your son take the ELISA delayed food allergy test.
Make sure to test him on all types of delayed food sensitivities.
Then keep him off all allergens for 6 months and retest.
On the brightside, your son is young, and will more than likely grow out of all immediate food allergies by the time he is 13 years old.
I commend you on your patience and perseverance to find the best information for your son.

True milk allergies are far less common than lactose intolerance, and can be devastating. If your child has a true milk allergy, you will know it. He/she will have severe symptoms such as: vomiting, diarrhea, rash or hives, difficulty breathing while lactose intolerance tends to cause gassiness, cramping and colicky behavior.

There is a cheese called chevre. It is a french goat cheese. Check your deli. Many people who are allergic to cow’s milk can consume goat’s milk products and many people with lactose intolerance can still eat cheese, and sometimes even consume milk in small amounts. Lactose is a milk sugar, and it changes during the cheesemaking process–more so with the harder and longer aged cheeses.
If lactose is the problem, you could just experiment with very small amounts of what ever cheese or milk product it is that you have on hand. If the child gets symptoms, then eliminate that product for a while. Wait at least three days to try another new food. If the child does get colicky or have gas, go to your local drug store (even Wal-Mart) and get the generic counterpart to Mylicon. It is usually called something like “baby gas drops”, and the active ingredient is “simethicone”. It breaks up the large gas bubbles and helps them dissolve into the stomach contents, hence passing out without causing pain. It is not absorbed, therefore will not harm the child even if you give larger than the recommended dosage.

NOTE: Raw milk has a small amount of lactase (the enzyme needed to digest lactose, and what is missing in people who are lactose intolerant), so sometimes a person can consume a bit of raw milk when they cannot drink pasteurized milk.

I would not advocate drinking raw milk unless I knew the farmer and had seen with my own eyes that he was meticulously clean in his production and that he monitored his dairy herd carefully for disease.

I don’t have to be an RN to answer this. This is probably not an allergy to milk. How old is the child. Are you talking about regular milk or formula? It’s normal for babies not to sleep all night. You should really consult your pediatricin.
