I am a senior in high school, and this is my first (and last) year on the tennis team. Occassionally, the captains will host a pasta dinner. Just a team thing I guess.

I also have celiac disease, so I cannot eat gluten (found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats…..pretty much everything). Pasta obviously has gluten.

Now, I am fine with not eating at this dinner. I understand that since it’s like an allergy, I often cannot eat what people serve (at any occasion). That’s not what worries me.

I jsut don’t want to look like a picky eater or anything. Basically, while everyone eats, I would sit down with nothing and it’s kinda awkward. I just am worried about sounding picky, because sometimes, I feel people think that. There is a MAJOR difference between not being able to eat somethig and not wanting to eat something (believe me, I would love pasta).

What do I do?

I’ve been just recently researching gluten intolerances, because I think I might have several of the symptoms. I am female around 20 years old, and although I haven’t put two and two together until now, I think I may have started developing some of the symptoms around 16 or 17. I always ate a ton of cereal in high school, and towards the end I started getting terrible diarrhea and bloating. Also the most terrible tasting burps. I’m pretty sure I’m anemic, and bleed like crazy whenever I get cut. I have a very light bone structure and very low bone density. When I got to college, I started feeling fatigued when exercising after a few months, and ascribed it to overtraining and poor diet (which it most likely was). Now for the past few months I have been eating a diet similar to the South Beach Diet, and have significantly cut my carb intake. I think this has helped my digestion greatly, since I don’t have the severe diarrhea or bloating that I do when I eat cereal, pasta, and flour. Also, come to think of it, my mom gets indigestion as well when it comes to eating certain wheat products, though I don’t know exactly the extent of it.

I’m wondering if it would be worth it to go to a doctor and see what kind of allergy/possible celiac disease I might have, and how severely I need to restrict my diet. Any advice?

so… i love to bake. especially for my friends. but my boyfriend is allergic to like everything. gluten, sugar, sugar substitues (except sweet n low and sucanut), dairy, and soy (he can have rice milk tho). does anybody have any recipes that i could use for him! i rly like to make things for him but its just so hard with all of his allergies.

Celiac is an enteropathy, not an allergy, so are tiny invisible particles actually a legitimate concern?

I mean, I’m eating gluten-free, I get that, of course, and I understand why I can’t have, for example, french fries made in the same oil as breaded stuff, because it actually has bread in that oil that gets right in the food, but a lot of this other stuff seems overboard. Do they think I am made of money and have time to eat only at home for every meal and snack?

Like buying all new stuff, worrying about your stuff being cooked on the same grill. New toaster, new utensils, etc, really? My rice bread is not going to pick up crumbs of old wheat bread from the bottom of my old toaster, I would see them, and pick them off before I ate them.

People on these websites act like gluten is invisible, like germs, but it’s not, is it? This woman at this link http://www.prayercore.com/csgvt/?Page=Avoiding%20Contamination apparently won’t even use the same computer mouse as her husband, and she is worried about her kid having gym class in the same room as the cafeteria. This sounds a little crazy to me.

Can’t I just, you know, not eat things containing gluten? Do I really have to worry about touching the keyboard at work or whether my rice bread sandwich sat on the same counter as one with regular bread? The dang thing is still *made* of rice bread, it sounds like pure OCD to suggest that it picked up invisible particles by touching the same clean countertop.

This gluten-free diet is expensive, and I hate to think that everything in my environment is working to cancel it out. If I can’t avoid contamination and my villi are never going to grow back anyway because I kissed my non-celiac bf or I used the keyboard at work or some customer sneezed on me and I inhaled a gluten particle, then what’s the point of changing my diet and spending all this extra money on it?

It can’t be all that bad, right, changing the diet is enough? I want to feel better but jeez. I can’t control everyone around me.
Everyone please ignore the first answer by “Hannah” about acai berries, it’s spam. The answer has nothing to do with my question about celiac disease/ wheat intolerance. Acai is yummy but I don’t know what it has to do with pills, and weight-loss diets are all scams, healthy eating and keeping active keep one healthy at any size, if one is active and eating healthy then there is no reason to worry about weight loss except stupid social pressure. This question is about celiac diet, using diet in the CORRECT sense of the word meaning “way of eating”, which has nothing to do with weight loss, Hannah. I am asking a question here about whether cross-contamination is really that big of an issue if one has celiac and is eating gluten-free/celiac-safe foods.

I have been battling health issues for 7 years. The doctor explained that yeast and sugar make my illness worse. I also have a allergy to nuts. So now I have to change my entire diet, which I am willing to do so I feel better. I just don’t know where to begin! i do not mean a wheat ALLERGY… i mean an INTOLERANCE… not where your throat closes up and you cant breathe or you get hives… but where you get abdominal pain and diarrhea… i have been tested for celiac disease and the tests came out negative. but whenever i ate gluten i didn’t feel well… but i decided to test how i feel when i just don’t eat wheat and eat other things that do contain gluten (such as in oats and barley..) It has been 2 weeks now and i feel fine. but i am wondering if maybe that’s just because i am not eating a lot of gluten… or if it’s because i only have a wheat intolerance (but i’m not sure if there is even a such thing as just a wheat intolerance).

Anyone have a good recipe for gluten-free chocolate chip cookies?

I’d prefer one where I did not have to buy separate ingredients to make the flour, because I don’t have the allergy and I’d never use the items (2 cups rice flour, 2/3 cup potato starch, 1/3 cup tapioca flour and 1 teaspoon xanthan gum) again.

But I do want a reeeeally good recipe for these because I’m making them for my best friend while he’s away at camp. :3

Hey

Well, tomorrow im going to a party and have been asked to make the cake. The problem is – it needs to be milk free and also flour free. Im the milk allergy sufferer, so i have plenty suitable butters etc to use so thats no problem – but due to my friend forgetting to bring it in , i have no gluten free flour =(

I have researched flour free cake, but they all need chocolate and i cant/dont have any! I’m really stuck on what to do, any ideas of recipes for a cake or really anything else i could make would be really helpful!

for a few months now I have been coughing up clear phlegm… It started getting worse with bigger chunks coming up and a constant feeling of phlegm in my throat with my nose feeling constantly stuffy. I always feel like I have to cough every 2 seconds and blow my nose. I had some kinesiology allergy tests done and it showed up that I was sensitive to wheat , dairy products & potatos. I was advised to go on a wheat & gluten free diet and cut out the dairy & potatos all together. I was just wondering if anyone else had a problem with phlegm and this sort of diet helped to shift it? Also in the morning my chest feels congested when I first wake up. I have mild asthma but the doctor’s are persistant in saying that this is not asthma related. I have even been told to come off my inhalers by the asthma clinic but I cannot seem to manage it. Replies will be appreciated.
p.s I have been to different doctors had 3 courses of antibiotics and it did not lift. The phlegm is clear so it is not an infection.
