Gluten-free diet a remedy for eczema.?

My son is 13wks and has really bad eczema. From birth til about 4wks his skin was dry and peeling but I heard it was natural. His eczema and seborrheic dermatitis started at about 8wks. Time goes by so fast its hard to keep up. However when the doctor recommended I introduce a small amount of cereal to his diet, the eczema seemed to get worse. It was also at this time that I switched from breastmilk to formula and had to switch from the pwdr to concentrate. I don’t know if he has an allergy but the doctors haven’t explored this as of yet. I heard a doctor on a radio show give a woman advice for treating her childs eczema but I didn’t hear it all. I heard her say “gluten-free” and “change the way we eat” but thats all I remember. Has anyone ever heard of gluten-free being a remedy for eczema? If you have tried it, what were the results?
I keep him moisturized to the point he’s slippery but his skin remains extremely dry. Right now we’re doing fragrance free everything and hydrocortisone lotion for the bad areas. If that does work, the next step is to switch from Dreft to Ivory Snow or Tide Sensitive.
I use Beechnut rice cereal – is that gluten-free? If not what are some gluten-free cereals. He’s almost to the jar food stage so can anyone recommend some glutn-free jar foods.
NO website advice unless you have personal experience to back it up!! If I wanted to know what a website recommends, I can look that up myself.

Eczema Help,..Possible food allergy?

I have had eczema non stop for ten years without remission unless I used steroids and it would clear up. I have swore off steroids due to the side effects and I have suffered non stop for 2 years straight without one second of relief from intense itching, burning etc.. So by the grace of God I had a thought that maybe I have a food allergy and I decided to eliminate all wheat/gluten from my diet. Within 2 days my skin totally cleared up and lasted a whole week! But now it has come back a little bit, not near as bad or even close to what it was for the last 10 years. I had a chronic stuffy nose that has totally cleared up as well,. I don’t understand why it came back a little bit maybe it needs more time to heal I’m not familiar with food allergies so if you have had a similar situation PLEASE let me know if I should con’t with this diet or what you think Thanks!!

Eczema related to allergies in one-year-old?

My daughter (Age 1) has been getting these dry, red patches all over her legs (doctor says eczema) since she was about 4 months old. She occasionally has foul-smelling diarrhea which leads to very bad diaper rash. My husband and I suspect an allergy is flaring the eczema since we’ve been working on the elimination diet and when she has things containing wheat/gluten it’s inflamed. Has anyone else dealt with this and does it ever link to a wheat/gluten allergy? Is there any test to confirm a food allergy in children this young?

My son has eczema and was prescribed cream for it. It worked and made it go and it does reappear.

My son was also put on lactose free formula last week as he had caught the flu from his sister. And since he was on the LF formula i don’t remember him breaking out.

He is back on the regular formula is really fussy and has broken out twice.

He has seen the dr. about his eczema but the dr. did not ask about the formula.

Could his eczema be a result to a milk allergy or intolerance?

I nor his father does not have any food allergies on our side of the family. Thanks for your help.

And should we switch him back on the Lactose free? We are on our last can of reg. formula, so immediate help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Eczema and Food Allergy are They Related?

Eczema is a type of skin ailment that usually comes with itching, skin thickening and scaling. Most often, eczema appears on the knees, arms, elbows and even on the face.

When this type of skin ailment affects children, especially those who have a clear skin, parents are not able to distinguish its cause at once.

Usually, parents perceived that food allergies are the source of their child’s eczema. However, there are numerous experts who find this belief to be untrue. Instead, these experts advise parents not to limit the diet of their child without consulting with a pediatrician first.

An example of eczema relating to food allergy was the case of a five month old baby who suffers from severe eczema.

According to the mother, the baby is intolerant to lactose early on, even the formulas of lactose free appear to be incompatible to her baby. Hence, she decided to shift to soy.

The soy shows a good reaction on the baby’s skin. However, after sometime, the eczema appeared again.

If you are in the position of the mother, would you think that the soy caused the eczema to the baby? Would you prefer to use again the lactose free formula?

As what has been mentioned in the previous paragraph, eczema usually appears and vanishes, leaving the child with clear eczema free skin for a couple of weeks. That makes the triggering factor of eczema hard to be determined.

This is the exact thing experienced by the mother in the presented case.

Though it is true that the controversy about food allergies as a triggering factor of eczema do not die away until now, the relationship of a lactose free formula to the baby’s eczema do not show a good reason.

According to the experts, the baby might catch the allergy from milk proteins, or if not from the soy proteins. They reject lactose, a sugar, to be the reason.

Shifting to lactose free formula can be her option. But experts affirmed that lactose do not include a formula that would cure the baby’s eczema. If ever it does, it is certainly a coincidence.

Lactose may develop other symptoms, like or instance fussiness, diarrhea or gas.

If you have the same case, it is suggested that you visit your baby’s pediatrician rather than rely on hearsay. You can cite to your baby’s pediatrician that you are suspecting the baby to be allergic on soy formula including those that are milk based.

Your pediatrician will tell you whether these formulas really worsen the eczema. Hypoallergenic formula like Alomentum or Nutramigen can be prescribed.

The pediatrician might also advise allergy testing. This is done through blood testing.

Now, if you really observe that the food or even drinks your baby had taken has worsen his eczema, then you can just simply avoid them. But clarify it with your pediatrician; he is more knowledgeable about food allergies.

Note that there are also some children who both have eczema as well food allergies. But these two do not tend to affect one another.

The best thing about this case is to know the treatments for eczema. Follow the prescription of the pediatrician; this will assure you that you are applying the right medication for your baby.

Determine properly the triggering factor. Usually, pediatricians prescribe moisturizers, or topical steroids.

Cure Baby Eczema Naturally – the Allergy Connection!

Food allergies seem to be quite a controversal subject when it comes to eczema triggers. Health practitioners are tought that food does not contribute to eczema flare-ups and that eczema cannot be cured, only managed – hence the standard prescriptions for steroid creams.

My personal experience, however, taught me otherwise. Since then I have helped many other parents who also confirmed my findings.

When I think about the digestive tract I often imagine its walls as our inner skin. Therefore if our outer skin can develop allergies when it comes into contact with an allergen, then it stands to reason that our inner skin can also develop allergies based on similar mechanism.

I have often quoted that eczema is an inner conditon and that genuine healing comes from within. When food is ingested, it comes into contact with the walls of the digestive tract. So if the baby is allergic / sensitive to a particular food component (esp. protein) the body will try to eliminate it by producting extra mucus or diarrhoea. If such body reactions go unnoticed and the ingestion of the particular allergen continues it may lead to inflammation and eventually to a leaky gut. Once the integrity of the gut wall becomes compromised, more and more allergies may develop.

Because of everyone’s individual make-up, it is possible to be allergic / intolerant to just about any food. This is because every food is composed of natural chemicals that our immune system may react to (e.g. salicylates, amines, tannins, caffeine, etc).

Identifying a food allergy / intolerance could be quite a challenging and time-consuming task. Fortunately there is a group of foods that make up about 90% of the most common allergens:

milk (dairy)
peanuts
eggs (mainly egg whites)
wheat
seafood & fish
soy
nuts
citrus fruits (mainly oranges)
strawberries
night shade family vegetables (tomatoes, aubergines, bell peppers, chillies, potatoes)
chocolate

How to test your baby’s allergies

There are numerous ways of testing what your baby is allergic to via both conventional and alternative approach. All methods have their pros and cons however I have summarized the most popular methods below:

The Skin Prick Testand the Blood Test (also known as RAST) are the conventional allergy tests that are used to test immediate allergic reactions (IgE mediated food allergy). Unfortunately, the blood test can be very expensive since the blood has to be sent to a specialized immunology laboratory to obtain results. Therefore the most commonly used diagnostic test in food and pollen allergy is the skin prick test.

Skin prick testing is a precise way of identifying food allergens in babies and small children. As children grow older this method becomes less reliable. The test is usually done for the main suspects such as dairy, gluten, eggs, soy, nuts and fish. Skin prick testing is also useful in detecting environmental allergens such as house dust mites, tree and grass pollens, animal dander, etc. The test can be performed at any age. If done properly, the test is simple and painless. The earlier the test is done the better since once the food trigger has been taken out of the baby’s (and the breastfeeding mother’s) diet, the easier it is for the body to go about healing.

The downside of this method is that it detects only immediate food allergies (involving the immune system) and will not pick up on any food sensitivities. Unfortunately skin prick testing is neither accurate for identifying intolerances to fruits and vegetables because your baby will most likely react to the naturally occurring chemicals in those foods instead of the food proteins.

Skin prick testing can give you a good head start however it is not foolproof. I therefore advocate the elimination diet since it is the most accurate way of finding out if your baby is allergic / intolerant to one (or more) of the above listed foods. All you need to do is to eliminate all of those foods from your baby’s diet for a period of 3 weeks and see if their symptoms improve (if the mum is breastfeeding, she will have to follow the same). You should keep in mind that it may take up to 20 days for a food protein residue to leave your baby’s system entirely – this is vital for the skin healing process to begin.

Avoidance of the offending foods for a longer period of time often resolves the problem however sometimes you will have to explore alternative methods of treatment if new sensitivities start to develop. My baby’s dairy allergy has been helped with a therapy that works on the energetic level correcting the underlying disturbance and clearing energetic blockages. It helps calm down the overactive immune system by desensitizing it against allergens. What’s more, not only does it treat allergies but it also helps with better assimilation of nutrients. I have learnt that people can be allergic to just about anything even vitamins and minerals. So no amount of supplementation will make their condition any better. This effective method restores the patient’s energy flow resulting in permanent relief and improved health.

Another big clue when tracking down food allergies (esp. to dairy) is the colour and consistency of your baby’s stool. If it is green with mucus and some streaks of blood in it, it usually indicates that your baby’s intestinal lining is irritated due to a food allergy / intolerance. Because your baby’s digestive system is still developing, your baby may find it difficult to digest some food proteins (especially from cow’s milk that accounts for most of food allergies in babies). There could be other factors that affect the colour of your baby’s stool such as viral infection, foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, etc. If however specks of blood appear in the stool, food allergy / intolerance is the biggest suspect (in breastfed babies, the blood may also come from their mum’s cracked nipples or as a reaction to something mum ate). Because of its highest allergenic potential, dairy is generally the best place to start. You need to remove ALL traces of dairy from your diet (not just the obvious ones such as milk, yogurt, cheese or ice-cream but also anything containing whey, lactose, casein, etc. It is imperative that you familiarize yourself with reading labels for hidden milk ingredients.

Once you have identified what foods your baby can tolerate without exhibiting any symptoms, try to rotate those foods so that your child is offered a varied diet. This is also the best preventative method against developing allergies later in life. Also remember that food allergies / intolerances are dose related. It may happen that your child can tolerate a small cup of yoghurt but if they consume any more dairy that day, it will cause their skin to flare up and your child may end up scratching uncontrollably.

To conclude, it is essential that we feed our babies organic natural food whilst paying attention to any adverse reactions. In my opinion food allergies / sensitivities play a major role when it comes to baby eczema so it is vital to identify those problematic foods and remove them from your baby’s diet for as long as required. The results will speak for themselves since when the skin will no longer be irritated from the inside, it will be afforded the opportunity to heal.

My 4 week has finally got over the baby acne, but something wierd is happening. The skin seems to be irritated, dry, and patchy looking with some rashes behind the ears, on the chest, and neck. He’s been getting milk based infant formula once a day for about a week now. Could It be a milk allergy?

Perfume is one of the major causes of allergic contact eczema. Perfume allergy occurs most frequently in women, but also among men, younger adults and older children.
What’s perfume?

A perfume is a mixture of fragrances, which are composed to form an aesthetic whole. The individual fragrance ingredients in a perfume are volatile and are released to the atmosphere at different rates, so the smell is changing over time. A perfume can consist of 10 to 300 individual substances and there are some 2500 different fragrances to choose from in the composition of perfumes. Fragrances may be small chemicals or natural extracts from, for example plants. There is no fundamental difference in their ability to give allergy, whether they are chemical substances or whether they are natural, actually the leading cause of perfume allergy are natural extracts. Perfumes are added all kinds of products in the cosmetics and cleaning products and used in toys, stationery, air fresher, industrial products, paint, cutting oils, and more.

What is the cause of perfume allergies?

Perfume allergy occurs when too large amounts of allergenic fragrances are used in products. Of the 2,500 fragrances, which are found, is about100 known as allergens in humans, there is some 25 which is of some importance to 10-12 as the most significant.

In spite of the relatively few fragrances, which are known allergens, these drugs have just been widely used in the composition of perfumes for all purposes. See table.

Products which are in prolonged contact with skin, gives everything else being equal a greater risk of allergies than products that are only briefly in contact with skin. In the latter group belongs shampoo. In the former group includes perfume, eau de toilette, eau de cologne, deodorant and creams / lotions.

What are the symptoms?

The first symptom of perfume allergies are often eczema in the armpit after using deodorant. Eczema can disappear again at the cessation of the use of the specific deodorant, which has caused eczema. In other cases continues eczema or come back at a later time when you use other products that contain the allergenic fragrance that can not tolerate. It can cause hand eczema, widespread eczema on the face and body.

How frequent is it?

Perfume is one of the major causes of allergic contact eczema. Perfume allergy occurs most frequently in women, but also among men, younger adults and older children. Recent studies from Germany estimates that around 4% of the adult population has perfume allergies. Several Danish studies have shown a doubling of perfume allergy over the last 10-15 years in the population. This is caused by an increasing consumption of perfume in a variety of products, presumably with the use of large quantities of perfume in the individual products, without you have adjusted the use of allergenic fragrances. Approximately 10% of eczema patients are tested for allergies, have perfume allergies.

Diagnosis and treatment

The diagnosis perfume allergy made by a patch test also called patch tests. The doctor uses a mixture of 8 fragrances, 7 chemicals and natural extracts to diagnose perfume allergies, also used a large number of individual fragrances and formulas for diagnosis. The mixture of the 8 fragrances called a perfume mix (Fragrance mix) and has been in use since early 1980. In recent years, there developed a further diagnostic testing: Fragrance mix II. It contains six fragrances, which are frequent cause of allergies. All eczema patients tested routinely honor at the explanation of allergy, most often with their own cosmetics, perfumes and more.

What can we do?

Persons without perfume allergies:

If you want to satisfy themselves fully against perfume allergies, you need uparfumerede products.

In all cases, one should avoid using perfumed products on eksemhud, as eczema increases the risk of allergy occurs because of skin protection barrier is broken down.

People with perfume allergies:
If you have severe allergies perfume or wish to secure the whole, one should avoid using perfumed products.
The easiest way to determine whether a product is perfumed, is to smell it.

Remember natural cosmetics or other natural products may contain fragrances that cause allergies.

If you want to use some perfume products, the new labeling requirement opportunity to select products from which we could not tolerate.
Products as eau de toilette may want used outside of the clothes. If you have a slight degree of perfume allergies will often be able to tolerate the use of certain fragrance products, particularly products that are flushed skin again, and therefore only have contact with the skin in a short time.

Chocolate allergies may cause asthma symptoms in susceptible people especially when a person is allergic to more than one ingredient in the chocolate. Some of the common ingredients include cocoa, milk, caffeine, gluten, soy lecithin, phenyl-ethylamine, nuts, theo-bromine, and dyes.

Chocolate allergy symptoms may include

anxiety,
confusion,
headaches,
hives,
irritability,
nausea,
eczema,

watery eyes,
runny nose,
sneezing,
wheezing,
coughing,
heartburn,
difficulty breathing due to inflammation of the airway, and
anaphylaxis or shock.

A diagnosis can be done through a skin test or a blood test that reveals antibodies in the blood stream. Treatments that can help with the symptoms include antihistamines, bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and epinephrine. The treatment largely depends upon the severity of the symptoms or reaction to the allergen. Of course, avoidance will help to prevent the reaction and discomfort.

Antihistamines can help to relieve the itching, digestive distress, watery eyes, sneezing, and the irritability. They can be obtained through a prescription or can be purchased over-the-counter at a drug store. The prescription antihistamines are less likely to cause drowsiness. People who experience asthma symptoms with chocolate allergies will probably need to use bronchodilators and corticosteroids to help with shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and inflammation. Epinephrine can be kept at home in an auto-injector so that it can be administered as soon as a person has a reaction. This can be used for any type of allergy and should be used as soon as possible to prevent anaphylaxis or shock.

Allergies seem to run in families and children who have both parents with symptoms seem to be at increased risk of developing them. Some sources believe that one of the main underlying reasons that lead to the development of symptoms have to do with a depressed or weak immune system. Other possible links may include chemicals and preservatives found in most processed foods. The most common foods that cause problems in susceptible individuals are wheat, dairy, shellfish, eggs, and peanuts. Chocolate allergy symptoms are similar to the reaction caused by other food sensitivities. Some of the worse reactions have been linked to peanuts and shellfish. Other possible food allergens may be found in products that contain proteins and yeast or molds. Some of these are soybeans, pickles, avocado, tomato, coffee, beans, cheese, wine, and beer.

People who have food sensitivities should make it a practice to read all product labels. Another good idea is to keep a food diary and record any time there is a reaction. This can help to narrow down the foods that a person is allergic or sensitive to so that he or she can avoid them in the future. For someone who is extremely sensitive doctors often recommend eliminated any foods that are possible culprits and then adding them back into the diet very slowly to find out which ones are offending foods. Someone with chocolate allergies will want to watch out for anything that has any of the ingredients found in chocolate such as cocoa and milk. “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst”(John 6:35).

To diagnose a suspected allergen there are a few different things that can help to do this. Skin tests can be done with the suspected substance to see if there is a reaction to the skin. A reaction that indicates positive would be the showing of redness, inflammation, and irritation. A doctor may choose to use blood tests to measure the amount of the antibodies in the blood stream to the suspected substance. Someone with chocolate allergy symptoms who is also suffering with asthma may need a pulmonary function test. This test measures the amount of airflow through a device called a spirometer. After airflow is measured then the patient is given a bronchodilator and airflow is measured again. With the bronchodilator the patient should have improved airflow; if this happens then the test will show positive for asthma. Doctors also use a skin patch test; the patch is soaked with the allergen and then taped to the person’s skin for up to two days. If a rash develops then the test will be positive.

Food allergies in individuals involve a response by a person’s immune system that is usually caused by a protein. When the body perceives a foreign invader then it produces antibodies to defend against that invader. These antibodies attach to the cells and contain chemicals called histamines and leukotrienes. So if the body sees cocoa or some other additive in chocolate as an invader then the chemicals are released and the person starts experiencing chocolate allergy symptoms. This reaction should not be taken lightly because it can lead to shock. Some of the beginning signs that this could be happening are itching in the roof of the mouth, swelling of the eyes, hives, shortness of breath, increased heart rate, and swelling of the throat.

There are additives in chocolate that may be the reason for the sensitivity. Much of what is purchased in stores contains milk, nuts, wheat or gluten, soy, and corn. These may be listed on the ingredient list as casein, whey, gluten, soy lecithin, and corn syrup. So individuals who think they have chocolate allergies may really have sensitivities to one or more of the ingredients. A person who has sensitivities to ingredients may not have any symptoms unless a large amount is consumed. For a proper diagnosis and the latest treatment a person should see a physician for an examination and inform the doctor about any symptoms that he or she is experiencing.
