Parents treat children with ADHD and autism with rice milk and corn bread
DIET: More and more children with autism are put on strict diet in the belief that it can ease the disease and give them an easier life.
Can a strict diet without sugar, milk and gluten help children with autism?
According to senior paediatricians, there is no scientific evidence that it should be the case.
Yet more and more parents bring their autistic children on a diet, where sugar, gluten and milk are banned, and where the cow milk on the breakfast cereal are replaced with rice milk, and the bread is made from corn or buck wheat.
- As a parent you will of course go to the end of the World for your child and do anything to give it an easier life. But such a diet is not something we recommend since treatment in health care is based on scientific evidence, says chief physician, Bodil Espensen, from the child and youth health in Esbjerg, Denmark.
Boom in the gluten- and milk-free diets
More dietitians however, believes that a gluten- and milk-free diet can help in many autistic children’s ability to, among other things to concentrate and communicate.
The reason is said to be, that many children with autism are intolerant of gluten and milk protein. The children can not properly break down proteins, which instead goes in the blood stream and acts on the brain as a morphine-like substance.
According to dietitian Jonna Deibjerg there have been a boom in the number of parents who put their children with autism or ADHD on the diet. In particular, the relatively new and controversial book “Kernesund familie – sådan!”, which recommends a diet without sugar, gluten and milk for hyperactive children and autistic children, has led many to start the process.
The Health Department has previously criticized the recommendations and warns that they can be decidedly harmful to the child, unless it has been diagnosed with milk allergy or gluten intolerance.
Some Facts
Gluten can be found in products made from wheat, oats, barley and rye. Instead, eat bread and pasta made from corn, rice, buckwheat and millet.
Casein is found in dairy products such as butter, milk, yogurt and cheese.
Instead you can use soy milk or rice milk.
